Championing a wealth of talent at ɫֱ’s College, St Margaret’s College, and Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, the Orchestral Extravaganza celebrates the remarkable range and depth of student music changemakers.
In an evening crammed with an extraordinary diversity of pieces, the highlights included works by Robert Sheldon, Ennio Morricone, Stravinsky, Piazzolla, and many more, performed by the Combined ɫֱ’s College and St Margaret’s College Orchestra, the Rangi Ruru Orchestra, and the combined strings section of all three schools.
The evening in the College Assembly Hall has ended on a high note, with the combined schools symphony orchestra delivering the rousing finale piece, Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.
College Director of Music Hugo Zanker describes the extravaganza as “a stunning accomplishment by all three schools, displaying the exceptional musical talent flourishing in ɫֱchurch independent schools”.
“Each performer has shared their love of music and commitment to captivating an audience while also inspiring future generations of musicians,” he says.
“Their musical excellence was something to behold. The boys and their guests from our partner colleges hit it out of the park with their version of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin. The performance transcended expectations. It is exciting to see how our partnerships and orchestras develop this year and beyond.”
Year 12 student Marcello Ferguson adds that he has enjoyed seeing the three orchestras combine for the performance.
“It was so exciting, weird, and cool to hear that many of my friends all make music together.”
